Kylee Phillips: Michigan Pop on Acoustic Alternatives

Kylee Phillips is a Southeast Michigan singer-songwriter, and her first full-length album is called Before I Am Invisible. She describes it as a record about love, heartbreak, identity and growing into yourself. John Bommarito took Acoustic Alternatives to the DuPont Phillips studio for her session, and it’s a good one.

Where she's from

An Ann Arbor Observer listing calls her a pop-folk singer-songwriter and pianist from Plymouth. She and her husband, guitarist and engineer Chris DuPont, perform as the duo DuPont Phillips, based in Ypsi. Their debut EP, Big Sky Sessions, came out April 19, 2024. She also won the 2025 Acorn Singer-Songwriter Competition, with Chris placing third. Not a bad year for one household.

What she sounds like

Her YouTube channel calls it deeply self-exposing pop. Her socials say “sad girl pop music out of southeastern Michigan.” Honest. We like honest.

The session

Acoustic Alternatives host John Bommarito says he first heard Kylee’s voice 18 years before this session, and it blew him away. By his count, this was at least their eighth time sitting down together for a conversation like this. That kind of history shows up on camera.

This one was recorded at the DuPont Phillips studio. Chris sat in, and John credits him with making it sound amazing. Every song was written by Kylee: What Living’s Like, Invisible, Burning and Storyteller.
